Beloved French/American singer Joe Dassin’s legacy lives on as his son Julien comes to Chicago May 13 as part of his Salut! tour.

“And if you didn’t exist, tell me why I would exist? To wander in a world without you without hope and without regrets. And if you didn’t exist, I would try to invent love, like a painter who sees beneath his fingers,” these are the words from a famous 1975 song “Et Si Tu N’Existais Pas” by Joe Dassin. He was a beloved French/American 60’s singer whose voice was and still is well known around the world. He left us too early, at the age of 41, but his passion, loving soul, and timeless music are still alive through his son, Julien Dassin. He carries the legacy of his father through concerts where he performs Joe Dassin’s famous hits.
After tremendous success in Europe, Julien Dassin launches a nine-stop North American tour of Salut! with a performance in Chicago on May 13 at 8 p.m. at the Copernicus Center located at 5216 W Lawrence Avenue.
Presented by Show One Productions and Cherry Orchard Festival, Joe Dassin’s greatest hits, including “Les Champs-Élysées” and “Et Si Tu N’Existais Pas,” will be lovingly performed anew by Dassin’s son Julien. He will be accompanied by the acclaimed Paris Tour Eiffel Band, a unique six-member ensemble that consists of some of France’s finest and most talented musicians. Julien was the one who put together this exceptional ensemble, which along with him shares the legacy of Joe Dassin.
This concert program will invite the lovers of Joe Dassin’s music to enjoy the hits of this legendary singer and the world’s most famous chansonnier. It will also add a new touch to his songs as Julian will perform contemporary renditions of his father’s greatest hits. The performances during this tour will also include new, original music from Julien Dassin.
Joe Dassin was born in 1938 in New York City. He was raised in a musical environment. His father, a prominent American film composer, influenced his passion for music. Dassin moved to France in the 1960s, where he found success and became a household name. His voice and his songs became popular in many countries, even in the former Soviet Union, where I was born. I fell in love with his voice while still being a little girl, and his songs still make my heart beat faster.

During this evening of nostalgic memories, the audience will be taken on the journey of a musician whose talent, beautiful voice, kind eyes, and touching manner of singing became loved by millions of people from all over the world before his life was tragically cut short.
“My father’s music has always been a crucial part of my life, and I’ve seen firsthand how deeply it resonates with people around the world,” said Julien Dassin. “I’m honored to bring his songs back to the stage for audiences across North America on this tour, and to share these unforgettable moments with fans, both old and new.”
The popularity of Julien Dassin’s performances is so high that he tours extensively across France and beyond. Julien has performed in prestigious venues including a five-night run at the Olympia in Paris and a sold-out week at Salle Pleyel. The fresh and emotional interpretations of his father’s repertoire catch everyone’s attention and bring tears to people’s eyes. Julien’s recent recording of “Les Champs-Élysées” achieved double gold status and was recently featured in Sony Music’s tribute to Joe Dassin.
With each performance, Julien celebrates love, family, and the timeless songs that have fascinated generations of music lovers. He puts all his soul into his performances because he knows that his father is alive while his songs are alive. And when you are doing something with all your heart, people feel it. They feel your warmth, your love, and your passion. For Julien, sharing the story and enduring the legacy of his father became his destiny. Because he knows, he exists because his father existed, and the words of his father’s hit “Et Si Tu N’Existais Pas” are forever in his heart.
